about us

Origins

Our sanctuary began prior to 2007 when its founder, Peggy B. Janneck, began sheltering stray and rescued cats in her barn in Poplarville, MS.   In 2007, Ms. Janneck and her family moved to their current home in southeast Louisiana, which has enough land and open space to build a permanent, protected sanctuary.  The barn in Poplarville was inadequate because it was not enclosed, and cats were regularly lost to predation by coyotes.  In addition, the lack of enclosure allowed raccoons to invade the barn and eat the cats’ food.

With the help of a friend, who assisted with the building design, Ms. Janneck began building the current sanctuary at her home in Louisiana.  Construction began in December 2007 and was completed approximately one year later.  Ms. Janneck transferred 19 cats from Poplarville to the current sanctuary.

Santuary grounds

The sanctuary is located on the Jannecks' residential property, and covers an acre of land.  It has three buildings, and currently houses 68 cats.  The entire perimeter is enclosed by a high fence to keep the cats in and predators out.  (See photos.)  There are trees and bushes within the enclosure, for exercise and recreation. Two of the buildings have electricity, with air conditioning and heating.  The third building has no electricity.  All are well insulated.

No-kill principles

Meow Mission is a no kill shelter.  No cat is ever put down to make room for another cat.  When a cat enters the sanctuary, they have a home for life.

Adoptions

All persons who wish to adopt a cat are carefully screened to make sure they have good homes and are able to properly care for the animals.  Persons who wish to adopt a cat are required to complete a written application, in addition to an interview.  At the discretion of the management, a home visit may be required.

Future activities and goals

The sanctuary will continue to operate as a refuge for stray, abandoned, and homeless cats.  The sanctuary currently has 68 cats, but there is space on the grounds to expand to 100 cats, or more if additional buildings are added.

In addition, we would like to expand spading and neutering services to animals outside of the sanctuary, including feral cats.  Controlling population growth is vital to reducing the number of homeless cats.  We would like to offer this service to pet owners at a low cost or free of charge in the future.

Nonprofit status

In 2013, Meow Mission, Inc. was formed as a Louisiana non-profit organization, and in 2014 was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  All donations are tax deductible.
